The sights in Old San Juan, whether you catch a glimpse of El Morro from the plane or you are taking a walk around the city, the garitas and those walls tell you "you are home".
Una garita (a centry spot) one of the iconic symbols of Old San Juan and of the island, the place where the centries stood guard to watch for incoming perils on our shores, a photo stop for many, and now a pokestop for others, for me an image I keep in my house to remind me where I'm from.

Long time in the making, I finally made it to Boston with my best friends. A first time trip for me, a regular trip back home for one of my friends, a back to college days trip for another, and there's the one that wants to move here. A great start of the day, touring the North End so I can feel close to Italy... The property where the Bonaventure Cemetery lays, was originally the Bonaventure Plantation owned by Colonel John Mullryne. The plantation served as a hospital for the French troops in 1779,which were trying to take Savannah from British control. They succeeded in 1782, branding the Mullrynes as traitors. The property returned to descendants of the Mullrynes in 1785, when it was bought by Josiah Tattnall, jr. and remained in the Tattnall family until 1846. It's life as the Bonaventure Cemetery started in 1846, lots of history, and some haunted stories can be found here. It is definitely worth the visit. Today we decided to take the Old Savannah Trolley tour. It has 16 stops along the historic center and every skip and a hop a local character joined us with a story about a particular site. It was well worth the price $26, there are several discount offers, including military discount. So far Savannah's historic center has exceeded our expectations. Tonight we are doing a Ghost Tour.... With a few stops along the way, we made it to Savannah safe and sound. One of the stops was an unexpected traffic stop by one of our fine State Troopers, and I should say nicest trooper. Thanks to my impeccable driving record I was sent off with a warning. Southern hospitality greeted us when we arrived. So far we are up to a great start. ![]() Sometimes there are cloudy skies ahead but that just turns a road trip into an adventure. I realized that I had "abandoned" my blog since I returned from Italy and since I'm not crossing the pond again until next year, what a better way to continue this page alive than by sharing some of my "staycations" and out of state trips. Tomorrow I'm heading to Savannah, Georgia; stay tuned for more updates... |
